WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN SEARCHING FOR A MAKEUP ARTIST

From a professional makeup artist’s perspective

study their portfolio

Does their portfolio or Instagram reflect the style you’re looking for?

If an artist consistently posts smokey eyes and full coverage foundation on nearly every client, and you rarely wear makeup and want a soft, natural look. I hate to break it to you, but that’s probably not the right fit.

Even the best artists will admit they’re not great at everything. Just like in any industry, we each specialize in different styles. Our kits are built around what we do most often.

For example, I specialize in natural to soft glam brides. If I do 100 glowy, natural brides for every 1 matte, full-glam bride, my kit is is more packed with radiant, skin focused products, instead of matte, heavy, full glam products.

That doesn’t mean I can’t create a matte look (I totally can!), but you might get a better result from an artist who lives and breathes that style—because their kit should be fully stocked with those exact products and tools.

read their reviews

Really take the time to read their reviews. One or two negative reviews don’t automatically mean the artist is bad, however if you notice a consistent pattern, that’s something to pay attention to. As a client, it’s important to be informed and communicate any concerns with the artist ahead of time.

business side

  • Did you know that in the state of Virginia, anyone can do makeup ?
There are no regulations, no testing, and no licensing required. While this can work out in some cases, if I were a client, I’d personally look for a certified makeup artist or licensed cosmetologist. (Not to brag but I am both haha!)

Proper training teaches essential sanitary practices. A clean, safe kit isn’t just about professionalism. it’s about protecting YOUR skin and health. As the client

  • There’s nothing wrong with makeup artists treating their work as a side gig… many talented artists do! But as a client, you deserve to know whether you’re hiring someone running a registered business or just working under the table.

    Here’s why that matters:

    1. Liability: If something goes wrong (like an allergic reaction or injury), it’s important that the artist has business insurance or some kind of protection in place.

    2. Payments & Contracts: Things can get messy fast if there’s no official business structure. Without proper documentation, you have very little protection as the consumer.

So don’t be afraid to ask! It’s about making sure you’re covered just as much as they are.

do you get along with them personally?

This is probably the most underrated aspect of finding a makeup artist. Do you actually like who they are? If you are hiring an artist for your big day, I don’t know about you but myself if anyone is around me on one of the most special days of my life… I want to like them. Not saying you two have to be besties for ever but their attitude is naturally going to impact your attitude. Be wise! Ask to do a phone call or video call with them before signing a contract. If they are not willing to- that is a HUGE red flag. This tip is so simple but will mean so much day of!

Also consider if your communication styles align, do you understand their emails/texts/contracts?

What’s their social media presence like?

Think of it like hiring someone for a job… because you are!

Do you want someone who’s regularly out partying on Friday nights showing up to your 8AM wedding on Saturday? If they’re bullying others, spreading gossip, or constantly involved in online drama, do you really think they’ll bring good energy to your bridal party?

Yes, professionals are absolutely allowed to have fun and be themselves, but how they present themselves online can give you insight into how they might show up on your big day. Pay attention. It’s up to you to decide what you’re comfortable with and match their vibe with your vibe!

are you actually getting the artist you chose?

Believe it or not, makeup artists sometimes “substitute” with freelance artists and you might not even know until they show up at your door.

For example: if you booked Jordan Artistry (teehee, thank you!), and then someone named Kaleigh shows up on your wedding day… you’d probably be a little confused, right? That would never happen btw. (Not saying Kaleigh wouldn’t rock the look, she probably would! However you should know ahead of time)

This happens more often than people realize. You book a well-known artist, but behind the scenes, they have a team or network of freelancers who might be the ones actually showing up. That’s why it’s so important to confirm who will be doing your makeup. Especially on your wedding day, you deserve to know exactly who’s going to be there! ASK, ASK, and ASK again. Make sure the person you booked is the person you’re getting.
